Q: What is PrinterShare?

A: PrinterShare is a solution to print documents from a computer connected to the Internet to other people's printers on the network. With PrinterShare you can share your printers with other or print your documents on someone else's printer.


Q: Where do you get PrinterShare software?

A: The software is available for free from www.printershare.net. All you need to do is to download the installation package from the site, start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.


Q: How do I print to a remote printer?

A: Assume, you have installed the PrinterShare software. All you need to do is to select PrinterShare printer when print normally from any of the applications or software packages (i.e. Microsoft Word). The next screen will let you select the printer within PrinterShare network First time you need to locate the printer within the network.


Q: How do I share my printer so other people can print on it?

A: To share the printer you need to run PrinterShare console application. The application shows all physical and network printers you have configured on your computer. By clicking on each printer within the console application you may select or change its sharing properties - whether or not to share the printer on the network, what to call the shared printer for other users, etc.

You may then close the Console Application window. The application will be running in the system tray in a background mode. To exit the application and stop sharing printers you need to select File / Exit from the main menu.


Q: How do I choose which printer on the network to print to?

A: After selecting PrinterShare when printing documents, you'll see another screen where you will need to select from one of the previously used printers on the network or find new ones. You can locate printers on the network by various criteria including nickname, email or other owner information.


Q: Do I need to be connected to the Internet when using PrinterShare?

A: Yes, for both remote printing and sharing you need to stay connected to the Internet. You also need to be able to browse the internet with Microsoft Internet Explorer.


Q: Does PrinterShare work behind a proxy or firewall?

A: Yes, PrinterShare works seamlessly behind any proxy or firewall you may be under (you may not even know you are behind the firewall on your home or office network). As long as you are able to browse the Internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer PrinterShare software will work for you.


Q: Can I share network printers?

A: Yes, you can share your local network printers as well as the ones physically connected to your computer. You cannot share PrinterShare printer itself (thus other people's printers).


Q: How do I know if my print job to a remote (shared) printer went through?

A: if there are no error messages of any kind PrinterShare guarantees the delivery of the print job to the computer hosting the shared printer and triggering local print job there. Normally it would "just work" but in case of local problems on the printing end (for instance no paper in the tray or no ink in the cartridge) it would be owner's responsibility to fix them. Most probably the job will be placed in the queue and printed when the problem is solved.
